Evening event at Parioli Theater to celebrate “Without Words,” the Maurizio Costanzo Award-winning play in prisons

Rome, May 22, 2025 – It is Sanquirico Prison in Monza to win the Maurizio Costanzo Prize in Prisons, thanks to the intense play “Without Words,” written and performed by the inmates themselves in collaboration with the Geniattori company, directed by actor and director Mauro Sironi.

The play, selected from 26 proposals from penitentiary institutions throughout Italy, was staged on May 20 at the Teatro Parioli Costanzo in Rome, in an evening charged with emotion and meaning, conducted by Camilla Costanzo and enriched by the presence of prominent guests such as Massimo Giletti, Giobbe Covatta, Aurelio De Laurentiis, Rita Dalla Chiesa and Maria De Filippi.

The jury, chaired by host and theater director Pino Strabioli, flanked by “Voglia di Teatro” association president Brunilde Di Giovanni and Corriere della Sera journalist Paolo Conti, awarded a work that was able to recount, with expressive force and sensitivity, the everyday life of prison life. Eleven silent but deeply communicative paintings, accompanied by Vasco Rossi’s songs, moved the audience by telling the intimacy of a human journey made of pain, repentance, forced cohabitation and desire for redemption.

Closing the evening was a speech by Undersecretary of State Andrea Del Mastro Delle Vedove, who praised the prison police force and recalled Maurizio Costanzo’s commitment to the prison world, stressing the importance of initiatives that promote culture as a tool for recovery and personal rebirth.

The initiative was realized with the support of the Lottomatica Foundation, which supports projects aimed at social inclusion and enhancing the transformative power of art and culture even in difficult contexts such as prisons.
