United for little patients: Lottomatica Foundation and Peter Pan alongside Bambino Gesù
80% of children with cancer recover a project to track their medical history and monitor long-term treatment effects.
Collaboration between Rome-based organization Peter Pan ODV and Lottomatica Foundation kicks off. First project: support to Bambino Gesù Hospital for the Healed Passport and in-hospital rehabilitation for children with cancer .
Rome, June 4, 2025 – Helping children healed from a cancer disease remember their own story. Thus begins the new collaboration between Peter Pan ODV, an association that has been alongside children and adolescents with cancer for more than 30 years, and Fondazione Lottomatica, an expression of the Lottomatica Group’s social commitment, which promotes concrete projects to address society’s challenges, ranging from health to social inclusion, from education to legality.
Pediatric cancers: more than 1,200 new cured each year
In Italy, nearly 50,000 people have had cancer during childhood or adolescence and have overcome it. Today they are between the ages of 6 and 55, and 50% are over 25. To these are added about 1,200 new healers each year, or80% of the approximately 1,500 new pediatric cancer cases diagnosed each year[1].
For an adult who was affected by cancer as a child, it is often difficult to reconstruct his or her medical history, to know exactly what treatments, tests, and interventions he or she underwent at an age when parents and guardians are in charge of medical choices. Especially when these figures pass away.
With them in mind, thanks to the support of Fondazione Lottomatica, Peter Pan ODV renews its support for the “Passport of the Healed” project of the Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome. A document, digital or on paper, designed for children and adolescents who have completed their cancer treatment pathway and which contains the clinical history of the little patient, who will be able to use it as a lifelong historical memory. In fact, the Healed Passport details all treatments received, medications, therapies and surgeries, as well as any complications encountered in the course of treatment. Future patients’ physicians can, thus, have a tool to monitor and prevent possible long-term effects of treatment and have guidance for patient-tailored follow-up.
Pediatric oncology rehabilitation: integrated support as early as the hospital
The collaboration between Peter Pan ODV and Lottomatica Foundation also includes supporting the rehabilitation paths offered by Bambino Gesù Hospital for children with cancer.
Rehabilitation is an indispensable piece in the recovery of functions compromised by disease, treatment and prolonged hospitalizations, and it is essential to start it as soon as possible. Thanks to this project, targeted physiotherapy, occupational therapy and motor, speech and swallowing rehabilitation interventions can be offered to young patients directly in the hospital.
“We are very happy to inaugurate this collaboration with Fondazione Lottomatica,“explains Roberto Mainiero, president of Peter Pan ODV,” which has immediately shown great closeness to our mission and special attention to the difficulties of children affected by a pediatric oncological diagnosis and their families. Thanks to their contribution, we are able to renew, again this year, our support for the projects of the Healed Passport and the rehabilitation of the Bambino Gesù Hospital: two projects that we have been supporting for a long time and that are fundamental to improving the quality of life of children and adolescents with cancer. In our homes we welcome children and their families who come from outside to be treated in Rome’s hospitals and stand by them during the most difficult period, that of illness. But healing is also a long journey, which requires many trials for the little ones. With these projects we can stand by them even at this stage and give essential help for the rest of their lives “.
“Supporting those who face and overcome an oncological disease since childhood means contributing concretely to building a more just and inclusive future. With this initiative, Fondazione Lottomatica wants to stand alongside Peter Pan ODV and the Bambino Gesù Hospital to guarantee healed children essential tools for continuity of care and for their full autonomy, even as adults. It is a project that reminds us how much clinical memory is an integral part of health, and how every story of healing deserves to be accompanied and cherished ” said Riccardo Capecchi, president of Lottomatica Foundation.
“We are very grateful,” says Tiziano Onesti, president of Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital . for the support offered by the Peter Pan Association and the Lottomatica Foundation to the Healed Passport and Rehabilitation projects aimed at children with cancer. The collaboration between these organizations and our Hospital represents a virtuous example of a path of solidarity, which strengthens the effectiveness of the actions undertaken and optimizes their results for the benefit of the most fragile people. Through tools such as the Passport, which makes it possible to monitor and prevent the long-term effects of treatment, and through targeted interventions in physiotherapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitation, we can continue to support our children even after their treatment has ended, offering constant support to their families. We look forward to continuing this collaboration in the future, expanding projects to benefit young patients and families to contribute to their well-being and quality of life “.
