Lottomatica Foundation celebrates 80 years of the Republic at the Quirinale Historical Archives
The first event of the “Four Lessons on the Republic” track was devoted to the central theme, “Origins of the Republic and the Constitution: Memory, Rights, Democracy,” which enhanced the country’s historical memory and promoted reflection on the current meaning of democracy and the principles enshrined in the Constitution.
The opening of the proceedings was entrusted to the institutional greetings of Marina Giannetto, Superintendent of the Historical Archives of the Presidency of the Republic. The meeting was then introduced by Francesco Clementi, Full Professor of Italian and Comparative Public Law and Director of the Master in Electoral and Government Sciences at the Sapienza University of Rome. Following this, the lectio magistralis was given by Umberto Gentiloni Silveri, Full Professor of Contemporary History at the same university, who retraced the milestones of the birth of the republican state.
A series of four meetings dedicated to the Republic
The 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic provides an opportunity to explore the principles on which the democratic state is founded. In particular, the path of reflection concerns the role of the Italian Constitution, the value of civic participation, the protection of rights and freedoms, and individual and collective responsibility in democratic life.
The initiative is part of a broader cultural journey articulated in a series of thematic meetings throughout the year, focusing on a few key issues:
- Origins of the Republic and birth of the Constitution;
- Citizenship and democratic participation;
- Legality and the rule of law;
- Relationship between the Republic, Europe and the international context.
