Libri Liberi”: the second edition of the cultural project in Italian prisons
It kicked off on April 9, at the Casal del Marmo Juvenile Penal Institute in Rome, the second edition of “Libri Liberi,” the reading cycle dedicated to prisoners promoted by Fondazione De Sanctis, under the patronage of the Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with the Department for Juvenile and Community Justice and with the support of Fondazione Lottomatica.

The inauguration was held in the presence of Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio, Undersecretary Andrea Ostellari, Rome Public Prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi, Department Head President Antonio Sangermano and Anac President Giuseppe Busia.

Opening the program was actress Benedetta Porcaroli, who starred in the first meeting of the new edition interviewed by Repubblica journalist Laura Pertico.

A series of meetings in Italian penitentiary institutes
“Libri Liberi” was created with the aim of bringing culture and literature inside penitentiary institutes, offering inmates opportunities for reflection, personal growth and comparison through reading and dialogue with important interpreters of the Italian artistic scene.
The day opened with the screening of Zvanì – Il romanzo famigliare by Giovanni Pascoli, a film directed by Giuseppe Piccioni.
After this first event in Casal del Marmo, the project will be developed over the course of 2026, touching several institutions throughout the country. The project will conclude on December 11 at the Institute of Nisida, in Naples, with the participation of Alessandro Preziosi.
The project is based on the conviction that culture can represent a real lever of inclusion and individual awareness, even in the most complex contexts.
Each meeting is conceived as a participatory experience: readings, moments of direct dialogue with artists and spaces for discussion transform literature into a tool for sharing and personal growth.

Lottomatica Foundation’s support
By supporting “Libri Liberi,” Lottomatica Foundation confirms its commitment to projects that promote access to culture and foster processes of social inclusion. Contributing to the implementation and development of this initiative means concretely supporting those who work in contexts of fragility, recognizing in culture a tool capable of generating value for people and communities.
